Saw Hadestown for the first time, was shocked to hate a lead!

Post Body

I went to yesterday’s (9/11) 3 PM showing, and was excited to see Eva and Reeve as I knew they had originated these roles. I was so unbelievably let down by Reeve’s performance. He was playing an unbearable caricature of an awkward guy, complete with dumbfounded blinking every time he was looking at Eurydice and THE stiffest and most painful body language I’ve ever seen on a Broadway stage. Any moments that focused on his presence or his acting immediately took me out of the show. His vocals were very thin and felt strangely pop-punky and wrong for theatre.

Am I alone in this opinion?? It feels extremely harsh to be this disappointed, I’m shocked that he’s been in the role this long if it’s been like this. Has no director or fellow cast member brought this up?
