Is Kara Young supposed to have an incredibly raspy voice in Purlie Victorious?

We just saw the show (loved it!) and her character had this enchanting, raspy voice. I assumed that was how she, Kara, sounds normally. But I listened to a few interviews with her and she does not sound like that at all. Then I saw a clip from the show, and in that recording she doesn't sound raspy either. So I'm maybe thinking she lad laryngitis or something?
