In response to anti-government protests leading up to the November elections, the ruling Sanation government in Poland has arrested the leaders of the left-wing Centrolew alliance and imprisoned them in the fortress of Brest. Reports are that Marshal Piłsudski himself gave the order to have the opposition rounded up. The government has accused members of the Polish Socialist Party of collusion with the Soviet government to plot a pro-Soviet coup.

There are also reports of election tampering by the Polish government, as well as rampant censorship leading up to the election. Time Magazine wrote:

During the campaign which ended in Poland's general election last week, opposition papers were so mercilessly censored that some were reduced to printing pictures of Friederich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900) with the caption : He Died Crazy. Because Dictator Josef Pilsudski has publicly made such statements as that "Parliament is a prostitute!" (Time, July 9, 1928) and because he somewhat resembles Philosopher Nietzsche in face and whiskers, his government promptly confiscated all Nietzschean campaign pictures, all papers in which they appeared.

As a result, and with no new parliament to replace the old, the government has dissolved the Sejm and the Senate. No word has been given about when, or if, future elections will be held. In the interim, Prime Minister Bartel has resigned from his position. Marshal Józef Piłsudski has been named interim prime minister until the crisis can be resolved.
