First let me make it clear that I'm a big fan of Brett Cooper as well as Amala Ekpunobi. Both are very strong voices that tell the truth and we need more of them now.
With that said, something both of them, especially Brett, do in their videos that's really starting to get annoying is this constant use of cutaway memes (maybe there's another name for them in the vlog world, I have no idea). Every time Brett makes a strong point, there's a cutaway to a meme; in particular clips from SpongeBob, The Other Guys, and the facepalm scene from Naked Gun 33 1/3 all get used a lot. It feels like they include at least one cutaway meme every other minute.
In general, it feels like all YouTubers are doing this more and more now, and I just find it distracting. It's more random than it is funny. I watch a lot of movie/TV-discussion vlogs, and at least there the use of cutaway movie clips makes sense. But Brett and Amala discuss serious political issues and I consider both of them strong pundits; it's like they don't trust us as their audience to listen to their points without throwing a quick and random reference at us every 2 minutes.
On top of this, Brett has admitted that she doesn't even care about SpongeBob; she released a video sometime ago where she watches the cartoon for the first time. So knowing that all these random SpongeBob clips in her videos aren't even coming from her but are her editor's choice just makes the whole thing feel like even more of a performance.
I strongly wish not just Brett but all YouTubers and certainly political-based ones would stop with this juvenile practice of the cutaway memes.
