I sometimes can't cancel down sig

it's really pissing me off but like the title says sometimes I can and sometimes can't I'l just keep going. it feels completely random and has fucked me over many times. I just fly down to my death without me being able to do anything. I'm talking going down from the above the stage and not stopping until I die.
is this a bug or am I not aware of some secret?
