The human brain has always been subject to a plethora of problems and disorders. And it doesn’t seem like that many people care about the prevention of these problems only solving them when they occur. I think that with our current technology we could begin to create the perfect brain that is unable to experience extremely unpleasant emotions and feelings. I’m not saying that we need to get rid of pain and suffering entirely but definitely blunt it because I believe it’s much to intense. I also think that the brain should be reworked so that it’s incapable of falling mentally ill. We could create the perfect existence. I don’t know exactly how this would be done most likely through altering genetics or something of that sort. But anyway I just wanted to post this because it’s something I think about quite often and I’m wondering if anyone else has any similar ideals.
Yes, I was also thinking a lot about that kind of stuff the last years. Suffering is sometimes really too intense and if we can do it safely I even think that it is our responsibility to do everything to protect newborn and young children from mental pathologies.
But I don't know if that is already possible and safe.
I just wish I was born some decades later when this will be possible.
For people alive today we may also find a way to attenuate suffering, but you would have to know what the neural mechanisms underlying suffering are.
For example people without amygdala lack the ability to be afraid. Now you probably won't want to shut down your amygdala because it can be important at times to be afraid. But if anxiety is becoming an obstacle to your daily life and social interactions, then maybe you could attenuate amygdala activity just a little bit with invasive or non-invasive stimulation techniques.
But suffering is more than just anxiety I think and we don't yet understand the brain to an extent that would allow us to safely and broadly cure everybody from suffering. Suffering itself is also not classified as a disease so you can't find a "treatment" for this.
But anyway it is a very interesting topic and we should be doing more research on this
