A lot of casual boxing fans got into boxing through what is likely the most iconic division, heavyweight. Some of the first names they get exposed to are the all time greats: Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, ect. Part of what made these guys cool and relevant to think about (imagine all the times announcers compare a boxers attribute or technique to one of the greats) was how you could
compare them with current boxers, you could even imagine them fighting the current crop of heavyweights!
But with a new division splitting heavyweight the champion at bridgerweight and ârealâheavyweight are going to be less comparable to the old heavyweights, which further disconnects boxing from its iconic and rich history. There is a already a disconnect between modern heavyweights and the old school heavys who would weight in at sub 200lbs. We dont think about or compare a Joe Louis, Marciano, Walcott, when we watch a Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua fight. Do we want to do the same with Ali or Norton or a young Mike Tyson or all the other sub 225lb fighters of history? I donât. I donât like the confusion this division makes when trying to compare greatness.
Historical perspective is a big part of how we determine greatness. For example, it was a big deal to mike tyson fans that he was the youngest heavyweight champ in history. How great would someone be if they unified bridgerweight? How good is that top 10? It doesn't look very impressive to me at all. Greatness is a huge part of what gets many of us to be a fan of a boxer.
The consensus is that boxing is already a sport that is bleeding potential boxers to other, safer sports. We donât need to see divisions watered down further. There is always going to be boxers that prefer weighting 224lbs on fight night, 149 lbs, 145 lbs, ect. that doesnt mean we need new weight classes between every weight class.
Iâm convinced that the WBC wouldn't mind hurting the sport long term if it meant short term gain. They are crooks and greedy and they'll make more weight classes if people accept it. If someone is going to take up the gloves and take the risk to fight imo they deserve better. They deserve the money and if they want it, the legacy that comes with competing in an exciting, popular, lucrative sport with ties to history. Not a watered down sport that will probably bleed fans the more and more people realize that they dont understand what being champ even means.
