I’m really confussed

Don’t get me wrong Boruto is easily my favorite show. But I’m a little confussed….
They never explain exactly what “chakra” is or how it works? The show also is always hyping Naruto and Sasukes past but they never actually explain it.
Is there a prequel or something I’m missing?
