Just Picked Up Borderlands 1. Complete Noob To The Series. Any Beginner's tips?

Just picked up Borderlands GOTY Edition. Always been curious about the series but the Handsome Collection being on PS was the push into me buying it, since if I end up liking BL1, I'll be able to jump directly into that.
First little bit I've played is looking good, but I find it's always wise, or at least interesting, to ask more experienced players if they have any beginner's tips.
For reference, I'm playing to mostly play solo and I'm going with Lilith.
One thing, in particular, I'm curious about is: How worth it is it to buy guns at the shop versus just taking what you can loot?
