Does thread comment notification exist? What does the star do?

I've tried searching for this a few times to see if you can get Boost to give notifications of comment posts. I'm not taking about comments to my thread or to my comments in a thread, but comments on any thread I'm interested in following.
I also can't quiterite figure out what the star does. I assume if it's possible, it would be through the starring, but I can't figure that out.
Is there a user's manual? I can't find immune and if there were is be able to search there.
