Why are they always interested in war/violence?

I'm a second generation Chinese Canadian. Parents both survived the "great leap forward" and saw all rhe misery firsthand and managed to come to Canada for a better life. They all fell into churches and right wing politics (yes, there are Cantonese versions of Joe Rogan and yes, it's exactly as awful as the OG is)....my mum was gleeful when Trump won this year. (Yesh, I'm still slightly nauseous but as a cisgender lesbian...)

They also hate violent video games/manga/anime. To the point of banning them from my childhood home and anything remotely violent was censored. Any fantasy violence was considered "low class" and stupid.

However, they are okay with LiveLeak style videos and news reels about the Gaza strip. I was at the tail end of high school when 911 happened and they seemed excited to see people jumping off the towers meanwhile, I was making efforts to stay away from the repeated violent images and the constant news cycle. (Lmao, I'm old enough that you could choose to turn off the news but that's another rant for the day.)

My dad just showed me a clip of missiles flying and he said "It's just like a video game!" Yeah, except video games don't result in death and destruction (well, maybe of your keyboard/controller).

I just don't get it. It's the same generation who thinks violent video games and make believe desensitized everyone meanwhile they were okay with watching the whole video of a man being choked to death by a corrupt police officer.

(My parents also hate horror movies. Which is rich because that is clearly fantasy and fun.)

Make it make sense. Violent crime on television in a news story is a-okay but Mortal Kombat is going to "rot my brain"?

But they did escape from "the great leap forward" and the crazy regime there. And then they saw how normal people tried to survive the war (so many stories of tragedy and loss) but then they get all excited about modern warfare and big booms.
