The other day I had off work for Juneteenth. My father who was over for dinner Tuesday asked what I had the day off for. When I told him (he's 77) he scoffed and said "Jesus, they make holidays for everything these days."
I love my father, truly I do, but he's the kind of person to still casually drop the N word.
I got a bit snappy and said "oh I'm sorry, is the liberation of slaves not good enough? But Columbus day is fine? Ya know, the dude who committed all sorts of human atrocities? That one's worth a Monday off, but you get offended by Juneteenth? I was gonna ask you if you wanted to get lunch when I had off tomorrow but nevermind."
He didn't have anything to say.
Anyone else come across this sort of response from parents or other boomers?
Yeah, probably not the best choice of words in retrospect, but dammit he made me mad.
Nah I'm with you there friend.
As revenge... it's June, wanna start breaking out the Halloween decorations?
I could be wrong but I remember hearing that the story that most of us know about Columbus was written by the same guy who wrote Sleepy Hollow.
Apparently the American people needed some kind of story hero so he scrubbed history and gave us what most of us were taught in 3rd grade today.
Don't point out to her that Jesus was likely born in the summer based on the descriptions in the Bible. She won't like that either.
I'm military and they gave us the day off. I'd call that a federal holiday. Plus the post office was closed too
Still keeping an eye out for my own 12 ft skeleton
Most federal/state agencies get off for it.
I legit had no idea what the day was till I watched the Watchmen series and Biden only made it a holiday like 3 years ago.

I mean, it's not widely advertised really. People get busy and forget.
Even before I had a kid I went to the mall some day in spring and was like... why is the mall closed? Where is everyone? It was Easter. Oops
