So I’m running errands today and stop by my bank. It’s a local credit union, and they’re very nice. I switched to them from a big bank because when I call a human actually interacts with me from the first pickup.
They’re very warm and inviting, and typically each branch features a small lounge and a machine that makes coffee, tea, as well as hot cocoa.
I go in, and as I’m going to get in line for the teller, I notice there’s a boomer in full freakout mode making a huge fuss and raising his voice as he bangs on the coffee machine because he wanted a hot cocoa. He’s almost incoherent and an employee gets up from helping a couple with their loan application just to go attend to this fool who thinks he’s been slighted because the machine wasnt making his cocoa.
Eventually the manager comes out and does what he can to try and calm the man down. He tries to open the coffee machine to see what he can do and gets a huge poof of cocoa powder all over him, ruining his black suit and shirt in the process. Eventually he somehow gets the machine to dispense water and the boomer remains upset, demanding he get his free coffee or whatever, until he sees nobody else is going to help him as they have all gone back to their posts and resumed assisting other customers.
Now I think it’s understood that things like a coffee maker and other similar amenities are meant to be a courtesy. They’re not some essential perk or something like it’s Amex centurion or some shit. So like a normal person wouldn’t be bothered that a coffee machine isn’t working since that’s a step above being there for decoration. What baffles me is that I’ve never seen anyone else besides boomers become so enraged and greedy over something so trivial but free. They love free perks and amenities and if they’re not there, even if they’re completely free, acting like they have been robbed or slighted or something.
Anyone else notice boomers, who supposedly did so well for themselves and are so rich and successful and wonderful in every way, are the first to lunge for anything free or complementary as if it was something they had never tried before? I guess it’s the same reason we see them freak out at McDonald’s over a $4 sandwich yet have no problem throwing their whole SS checks at an already well-funded campaign. Just dumb priorities I guess
