Is this poor guy dead, or have I got any chance at bringing him back?

Hi guys, I hope you're all well! I've had no luck with this little guy. He's less than a year old but in the past few weeks he's just deteriorated to how you see him now. I am only new to Bonsai care, but it's not going very well.

I scraped the trunk and there is green underneath, which I know can be a positive sign! So while out re-potting some cacti today I re-potted this tree into a larger pot with some Bonsai soil as well as trimmed the roots and some branches a little. He also got a good watering! He's also always in a spot where there is always sunlight for him.

Is there any chance he might come round, or is he a lost cause?

Any tips, tricks or advice is more than welcome!
