This morning I dropped off my Bolt at the dealer for the last time. All that's left are my custom Colorado plates -- and a cheque that is within spitting distance of what I originally paid for the car.
The Bolt EV (as everyone here knows) is an awesome car. Some don't like the seats, but I did. In all other respects it was something truly great: nimble, zippy, unpretentious, quiet, calmly competent, right-sized for hauling kids and their things, surprisingly roomy inside, rangey enough for hassle-free local use and the occasioal road trip, and of course free of gasoline and the vibration, noise, and perennial oil changes that entails. I loved tooling around in it all around the Rocky Mountains where we live.
I just couldn't tolerate the fire risk. We live in a pine forest, and the nearest fire hydrant is miles away. So on July 19 we filed a buyback request. About 10 days ago GM made me an offer within spitting distance of what we paid for the car (minus the tax incentives) in 2017. Today I dropped off the car and picked up the cheque. Bittersweet moment.
