What if the U.S. market crashes and never recovers?
Post Body

Hi everyone,

Long-time reader here. I've been a proponent of the VOO/VTI portfolio. However, I find myself pondering about the possibility of a significant permanent market collapse in the US.

We’ve seen historical recoveries post-collapse, but my question hinges on the 'what-ifs' of an unprecedented event where the indices do not recover. If there any scenario outside of US' collapse as a country that would cause a permanent drawdown in the stock market?

I hope to have a serious discussion on the matter, as many of us have our life savings in these broad-market instruments. Looking for data-driven perspectives, experience-based observations, and even critical counterpoints to this inquiry.

Two things I'll get out of the way:

  1. Yes, I know some of you (including me) have some VXUS
  2. Not looking for "If the U.S collapses, this will be the least of your worries." No, I'm going to care about my life savings even if WW3 occurs.

Thanks!
