I went through therapy for anxiety, depression, BDD, and dermatillomania about 4 years ago. I recently noticed my depression and anxiety worsening and I decided to go back. In the meantime, I had been a huge advocate for body acceptance, and when I see other people have a poor body image it breaks my heart and I try to share my experience with them. I went back to a psychiatrist and when he learned of my problems with intimacy he immediately asked if I hated my body when I looked in the mirror, and I quickly retorted no. However, over the next week I had come to realize that I actually was very unhappy with my body. In therapy I had learned I wasn't supposed to hate my body so I had been telling myself that I didn't hate it. I don't think I really believed it though. I was in very deep denial and I think it stems from comparing myself to my past issues, thinking, "well I'm not as bad as last time." But in reality I'm not practicing what I preach about body image and it was very embarrassing for me to admit that. I have mostly the same behaviors and feelings about my body as I did last time I entered therapy. The only difference is that now I believe I don't deserve to hate my body and I know that my thoughts aren't rational. I wish I could see it with my own eyes. I'm going through therapy again and I'm kind of overwhelmed by the work I have cut out for me. Any words of support would be appreciated.
