Well, I didn't tell you guys on the subreddit, but... Other people. When California was originally released, I was happy with it. Not impressed, but I liked it. I remember keeping up with all the news and to see that they wrote like 30 songs in just a couple months before the album. That's insane!
It took a while for the album to sink in right for me. I wasn't crazy about it at first, and I never was. What I noticed, and what a lot of you guys noticed as well, is that a lot of songs are kinda basic/simple. They all use like the same 4 chords, follow the same song structure, and no sweet riffs! Like, really?!
What I thought, and theorized was that they were anxious to get into the studio and do this. If you hear any of the HMNIM podcast then you'll know that John Feldman jumped a little too quickly on simple ideas. You can say California is almost a test album, a practice album.
I knew right away that whatever blink did next would be infinitely better. Now that they've gotten all their energy out, they got it over with, it's time to get real. It's time to actually start collaborating with Matt. He no longer is trying to fill thy void, and is putting his say. Misery, and now 6/8 are refreshing, they're exciting, and just kick ass. There's am awesome Alkaline Trio feel to it, but also a 44 tone, too.
All in all, I feel bad for the "I miss the old blink" fans, because I think we're gonna start seeing a really different blink from hear on out.
P.S. Feel free to disagree. I just wanted to share my thoughts and opinions on my favorite band!
