What does upgrading flasks with quicksilver actually do?

I didnt realize you actually lost one of your flasks, just got my first quicksilver and havent used it yet but I was reading on the internet people saying its not worth it. Does it make all of your other flasks heal more health? Heal you faster? What does it actually do? There is a lot of conflicting information and I would like to know for sure before I decide whether to do it or not.
