I recently acquired a patron of sorts, after being out of the knife making game for nearly a decade. I've been getting my shop together, including a forge that he bought for me without me really having a chance to vet it.
It's not doing the trick. One of the burners was badly made, it heats inconsistently, has a fairly low top temp to boot, and eats propane at a ridiculous rate. So, after having a conversation with him once I failed, again, to make it work worth a damn, we decided to get a new one.
I'm looking for recommendations. I've previously always worked in other peoples shops with whatever forges they had. Now that I'm buying one of my own, I'm trying to see what's good out there.
Looking for something with a decent top temp, since I plan on doing forge welding. Looking for at least 2 burners. I need enough length to do long knives (for context, the one I'm working on now is about 18", I'd like to be able to do 20"). I'd like it to have enough interior space to fit a crucible for casting. It would be great if it had a door on one end so I can close it off for better heat retention, but that's not a deal breaker; I'm willing to modify it if need be.
I'm also trying to not spend much more than $400.
So, anything you guys know of that fits the bill?
