Any advice on canister filtration ?
Post Body

Hi guys, newbie here.

I am planning on making a blackwater biotope and recently acquired my first 160L tank which is around 40g. I am willing to dedicate the time, money and effort to make it as best as possible.

However, I still have some questions regarding filtration. After many research I came to the conclusion that a canister filter would probably be suited for this kind of size. They also seem to be a lot better in terms of noises - tank will be in my room.

Only I wonder if these are not too powerful since a slow flow is generally ideal for blackwater tanks? Is there a way to reduce water stream? I plan on adding plants to the aquarium.

Another question, regarding medias which ones are you guys using? Would a mechanical filtration only be a good idea? I saw that carbon has a tendency to remove tannins... is it preferable to add carbons for a week only each month?

I'm looking for advice on canister brands and if overall I might be overthinking it?

I am just focusing on the hardware for the moment, taking it step by step. I know I want tropical fishes but no idea which ones yet! Should I take this into consideration before even looking for filters?

Any input is welcome, thanks!
