On studies regarding police violence
Post Body

Despite this topic being a political and social issue spanning decades, it is difficult to find studies focusing on incidents of police use of force that don't focus solely on lethal encounters.

There's a slew of reasons this oversight might exist, but it's a big oversight: using only lethality compared to encounter with police, stats-loving and context-ignoring ignoramuses can quote statements from studies like "The authors found no differences in rates of injury or death per 10,000 stops/arrests by raceā€”that is, blacks and whites were equally likely to be injured or killed during a stop/arrest incident." Source. They'll use this fact to point out that cops aren't racist, and ignore the fact that it implies the police are inherently violent.

This statement they will tout like the final conclusion also ignores several facts brought up in the exact same study same source:
* Black victims were significantly more likely to beĀ unarmedĀ than white or Hispanic victims.
* Black victims were also significantly less likely than whites to have posed an immediate threat to [law enforcement]
* Black individuals are 2.8 times more likely to find themselves in an encounter with law enforcement than whites.

Digging to find studies that focus on police use of force alone brings up an even worse picture: Blacks are more likely to encounter police use of force regardless of encounter. - this includes all kinds of force, not just lethal.

From the same study same source you can get some additional points:

  • Blacks are more likely to be victim to police force even when not committing a crime (no arrest).
  • More severe and lethal types of force are more likely to be used on blacks than on whites, regardless of criminal activity (no arrest).
  • Only when balancing for Part I violent crimes does use of force odds balance out.

Don't let Statists, biased racists, and ignorant number-lovers control their own fantasy-land narrative, bring out some facts - you may know it from experience but they only know about it from articles and podcasts. Light em up with facts.
