I've set up my feeder on a shepherd's hook, and it's stocked with fresh black oil sunflower seed as well as a tasty ball of suet. This is my first time using a birdfeeder at all, and I'm worried I'm missing something to make it welcoming to the birbs.
I get little visitors in my yard frequently, hopping around on the ground or rocks, all species that theoretically enjoy this type of seed. I initially had the feeder on a rock, but the squirrels raided it for all its seeds, so I moved it to a hook. The neighborhood birds are still swinging by the yard but none of them have tried the feeder. They are hopping around on the ground and pecking in the dirt instead. Is there anything I need to do to help let them know that a buffet awaits just a little above their heads? Should I build a trail of seeds for them?
Edited to add on 11/22: This subreddit is good luck! I got my first bird visitors today! Some pine siskins and house sparrows! And a mystery bird! Woohoo!
