Clonidine sleep-dependency and fatigue. Help, please.

Post Body

This is a shot in the dark because I know most people don’t take this anti-noradrenaline blood pressure medication, but to make a long story short I was prescribed .1 mg (worked way up to .2) to help with insomnia back in June. My psychiatrist assured me it has a short half life and won’t affect me in the day.

While it helps knock me out and reduce nighttime anxiety, I noticed I was getting ridiculously sleepy, lazy, unfocused, and brain foggy throughout the day.

I did some research and found out that its half life can be 6-23 hours AND it’s metabolized by CYP2D6 (which my genetics test showed I’m a slow metabolizer) so this stuff is probably taking a good 24 hours to breakdown to half a dose and it’s likely built up in my bloodstream.

But every time I try going off of it I have ridiculous insomnia and can’t function the next day.

I’m currently down to 50 mcg (half dose) and my sleep is slowly stabilizing as I get used to this new dose but I want to get off it faster because I’m still soooooo drowsy throughout the day.

Has anyone used this drug and had a similar experience? What would you recommend for tapering a drug with such a long half life? 5 days for full clearance? Should I drop to 25 mcg after 5 days at 50 or do 25% reductions?

I’m so sick of being put on meds they say “shouldn’t” do X, only to have them do exactly X, and then be dependent and have to deal with this shit.

Thank you for your help.
