Addressing inconsistent sleep

Post Body

I’ve slept poorly for the majority of my life and made a change 3 months ago after I hit a point where I was constantly tired, lethargic, moody and foggy.

I started weightlifting, eating well and sleeping earlier/at a consistent time.

My morning routine includes electrolytes and sitting in the sun for 5-10 minutes right after waking up. I began supplementing D3/K2, a trace minerals complex (zinc, boron, selenium, etc), a basic multivitamin, along with a good quality mushroom complex (lions mane, cordyceps, turkey tail) and magnesium l-threonate in the morning. I have 1 coffee 1 hour after waking up.

For the first month I slept like I had never slept before and woke up every day feeling like a child on Christmas morning. My dreams were so vivid I sometimes confused them with reality. I had energy like never before and was always in a fantastic mood. I stopped napping and become more motivated to do things with my spare time instead of laying down and resting. My cognition and memory were incredible and I began doing much better at work.

But then suddenly a month later my sleep quality declined abruptly. I’d sleep a full night and still wake up feeling tired, or I’d wake up throughout the night, sometimes being unable to fall back asleep.

I started taking the magnesium l-threonate, minerals and multivitamin around the time my sleep declined and I thought they might be culprits, so I stopped taking them for a week and then slowly added them back in one by one, taking note of how my body reacted - I realised that taking the magnesium and trace minerals right before bed caused the initial decline in my sleep quality. Although there was improvement after taking them in the morning instead my sleep was not like before

And here I am now. I feel better than I did before making these changes but nothing like that first month. I’m back to napping on some days and I have times where I’m still feeling foggy and tired. I still dream sometimes but they are quite weak and I forget them quickly.

I have tried drinking kava before bed and it helped for a week (almost as well as that first month) but then stopped working as well, especially since it makes me wake up to pee.

What gives? Should I scale back on all the supplements and just focus on a basic sleep-wake and exercise routine? Or am I doing something wrong? Has my body adapted to some of the supplements or do I need to cycle them?

Happy to answer any questions. I miss sleeping well.
