I told some friends about how I was feeling motivated to really clean up my diet and lose weight, after my recent DEXA scan showed I was 35% body fat.
Disclaimer: Not aiming to be unrealistically skinny btw, just want to get into the healthy body fat range for a woman of my age range.
Instead of them being supportive and encouraging me to get to a healthier body fat percentage, they simply told me:
“You can be healthy at any weight”.
Them: “Everyone knows BMI is bullshit.” Me: “But it’s not BMI, this was a proper body fat scan” Them: “Those body fat scans don’t take into account any other metrics.”
I just felt a bit gaslighted.
I do have other friends who are more health conscious and would be more supportive, but it was shocking to me how this group didn’t understand the significance of increased body fat as a risk factor.
Just fyi I am of Asian ethnicity as well, so for us our BMI and body fat needs to be lower than the Caucasian standard to keep things in the optimal range.
Any advice or how would you guys handle it?
