Why do things appear close and in more detail on less magnified binoculars?

I have these two pairs of binoculars and when I look through the 12x25 ones objects appear closer and in more detail than the 20x50. Is this because even though the 20x50 have a greater magnification they also have a greater diameter resulting in a wider field of view?
Are there any binoculars that might be higher magnification than 12x but still with a narrow field of view so I can see smaller objects far away?
