[S1 spoiler] Am I just an asshole or is what Axe did to get rich not that bad?

Ok so I just recently started watching the show and got to the part where it's revealed that Axe got rich shorting the market during 9/11 and I don't really get why it's treated like an unforgivable thing. Especially considering all the charity work he did afterwards. I was like 10 when 9/11 happened and remember watching the second plane hit live on TV so i remember what it was like to be alive during that era but it's not like he paid for the hijackers plane lessons or something.
