OOP’s housemate is addicted to harmful essential oils and insists they NEED to be diffused all over shared spaces.
Post Body

I am not OP. This is a repost sub.

For those unfamiliar, Young Living (YL) is a multi level marking (pyramid) scheme focusing on essential oils.

Young Living addicted housemate wants to put a diffuser in every room.

My housemate is a young living addict. I mean, she has literally hundreds of vials of that snake oil in her room. She is insistent that it’s “not an addiction” and that “it never harmed anyone”. She puts the oils directly on her skin, in her hair, in her coffee every morning. It’s insane.

And now she’s talking about how she NEEDS a diffuser in every single room of the house in order to simply be in said room. She calls me a liar when I say it’s too much, it burns my nose, makes me nauseous, etc. She is adamant that I actually need more oils in the house to “detox my body”.

I’m at my wits end here. I can’t evict her, nor move out. I’m really tempted to just throw the oils out myself at this point. I won’t, but I don’t know what I should do.

relevant comments:

“Maybe mention to the landlord about all the diffusers and excessive oil. Might be mentioning how it can remain in the home and damage paint would cause HIM to put a stop to her habit”

Comment from OOP:

“Yeah, the landlord was kind enough to give a very detailed and extensive list of things to look out for and take photos of. You have to meet a certain amount of things on said list before actual actions can be taken. And she (housemate) walks the line very well.”

Update posted about 4.5 months later

Update: YL addicted housemate is officially gone!!

I made this post a while ago asking for advice on dealing with a Young Living addicted housemate.

All of the wonderful advice paid off!

To be clear, it was three of us on a leasing agreement for a three bed/three bath house.

Well, to continue where the post left off, third housemate returned from their family emergency. They and I immediately got to work putting together research and documentation about the dangers of essential oils, Young Living specifically.

Landlord was very helpful on their end, letting us know exactly the kind of proof we’d need for an eviction notice, and who precisely to talk to from a legal perspective.

Finally, finally…. We were able to evict the YL addicted housemate. I believe the landlord will be taking that housemate to court because said housemate wants her deposit back. Landlord is making a case about the oils damaging the property and cleaning costs. I believe it’s the equivalent of smoking in a nonsmoking environment, but idk for sure.

I’m just sooooo beyond relieved to finally be rid of that person.

And the best part, because the leasing agreement is for three people, we were able to get a new housemate to replace the evicted one. That means other housemate and I won’t have to pay a rent increase or find a new place! The new housemate is going to be my sister, who turned eighteen last month.

She’s been saving for a place of her own, but when she heard about my situation, offered to stay with us to help us out. I couldn’t thank her enough!! I plan on driving her to and from her work, so she doesn’t have to pay for public transportation anymore, as a thank you. And buying her expenses (groceries, toiletries, etc) so she can keep saving for her own place.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who commented on my original post. Your advice was greatly appreciated and extremely helpful. Thank you all.
