It just dawned on me that Griffith’s final quote could be a reference to “World of Dew” by Kobayashi Issa. Here’s the original text with translation (some are slightly different) compared to Griffith’s quote. Then again, could just be coincidence.
露の世は 露の世ながら さりながら
Translation 1: The world of dew Is a world of dew But even so-
Translation 2: This dew drop world Is a dew drop world And yet-
Griffith’s final words: それもすごい消える ー筋の涙と 朝露の様に
That, too, will disappear With a single tear Like morning dew
