Cell phone usage (with an American carrier)

Visiting for about a week. My cell phone carrier in the states (AT&T) has an international plan that cost about $10/day (same for my girlfriend). Wondering if there is another option I’m overlooking? I’ve used portable WiFi hotspot in other countries and that worked out pretty well. Any ideas appreciated.
