Hello
I'm absolutely in love with the breed but I'm not sure if it is something for me.
A bit about me I currently have a about 2 year old aussi and want to get a second dog in the future (in 2-3 years). I live in the countryside with a lot of space behind the house (not fenced). I work from home and only have to go to the office a few times per year (3 times last year).
The two breeds I would be most interested to get would be a gsd or a malinois. I know both breeds required a lot of attention and work.
My current schedule with my aussis is: - 3-4h walking per day - obedience - Search and rescue training twice a week - obedience in a dog school once a week
I usually included the obedience and play session into the walks. I used to do dedicated obedience sessions but found they were to "easy" so I like to do them on the walk in changing locations.
If I'm not going to the training on that day I also like to do small search sessions for toys or his feed bag.
On the weekends we usually go onto longer hikes.
The schedule is an example and changes from day to day.
I would like to know if this would be enough work for a malinois or what do you guys do with your mali.
I know a lot of owners do protection work with there dog. I'm not completely opposed to it but we don't really have a good dog school around here to do it. A lot of them are pretty old school with their training methods which I don't like.
In the 1.5 years I'm in the obedience class now I met 5 people with a malinois who had go re-home there dog because they couldn't handle them anymore. So I'm pretty careful to decide because I don't want to have to re-home a dog if I got one.
Do you maybe know of any blogs/books about owning a malinois you can recommend?
