Hi there ! Long time lurker first time poster here….
Our kitchen had an older double wall oven which died last year and we replaced it with a microwave/oven combo. Problem was the new combo unit was almost 10 inches shorter which the installers addressed by building a shelf/platform to place the unit - result left a void at the bottom. Where we jammed in random oven accessories.
Was contemplating several options including building a drawer, yet was weary about building a box let alone matching the drawer face with the rest of the cabinetry. Was leaning towards getting a Kitchen aid stainless steel warming drawer but was back ordered for several months and still would need a lot of tinkering to make it fit in that space.
After looking at this eyesore for almost a year - found some extra shelving and trim in my attic which the previous owners had left behind. I had some basic Woodworking tools including a mitre saw, yet wasn’t able to trust my skills nor the tools for square cuts. Used this as an excuse to pick up a small table saw from Nextdoor in my area. I don’t know but let’s call it beginners luck - was able to build a fairly square drawer box with 1/2 inch birch ply with some challenges with pocket hole joinery, and running the grooves for the drawer bottom. Was also was able to cut the finished shelf to size and use it to face the drawer as an inset opening. The drawer below is an overlay but since the oven space was framed as an inset I was ok with that option. I was really surprised with the accuracy of the cuts and was able to nail that tolerance on my first attempt at the table saw. Should probably go buy a power ball ticket :)
Only thing left is to find matching hardware but this wooden knob is a subtle reminder that I built this each time I look at it :)
