r/BeginnerWoodWorking Grand Re-Re-Re-Opening
Post Body

Welcome to r/BeginnerWoodworking the #1 sub on Reddit that focuses on those who are just starting or looking to start their Woodworking Journey. We were closed between June 12th and June 22nd to participate in the Site-Wide protest against Reddit. But we are back now. In that time the active mods of this sub had some conversations and decided to use our "re-opening" of the sub as a time to make a few changes. While many of the subs that have participated in the protest have either decided to move their communities, or change the way their community works. We decided to return to normal operations pending some minor changes.

1.) Updated/New Rules

We have updated our rules for the sub. The majority of the rules have stayed the same. But we have separated out a few into their OWN rules, and clarified a few others. You can view the rules here. A few worthy mentions:

  • Don't Gatekeep - Do not gatekeep this community. If you think someone's post/work isn't appropriate for this sub. Report it. Calling out someone in the comments, or creating posts about "what is and isn't a beginner" will not be allowed.

  • No use of the word "First" or similar in titles. - This is pretty self explanatory, it's click-bait and lead to violation of Rule 1 and 2.

  • NO NSFW Images. - In the past a few people have posted pictures of their cut fingers/hands/arms from mistakes they have made. Those posts will no longer be allowed to be an image post. If you want to make a safety announcement about an accident/mistake. Make it a text post and explain what went wrong and how to avoid it.

Those are the main three major changes. The rest was just clarifying the rules.

2.) BeginnerWoodWorkingBot retirement

We will be retiring the bot at the end of the month.

3.) Removal of Top Mods

Part of our agreeing to re-open with Reddit was a reshuffling of the Mod List. The top two mods have been extremely inactive on this subreddit for a LONG time. Many of our requests to get them removed had fallen on Reddit deaf ears. It wasn't until Reddit reached out to us about re-opening that we requested the top two to be removed.

4.) Request for NEW Mods

This has been coming for a while and with the end of 3rd Party Apps, the current mods know we our ability to moderate this sub efficiently will be greatly diminished. So to help with that, we are accepting applications for new Mods. To apply to be a Mod, send a Mod Message to the Sub with the following information:

  • Username
  • Time Zone
  • List any CSS/HTML or Coding Experience (list language)
  • List any modding experience.
  • Why you want to be a Mod.

Now you may be asking, WHY we care about some of that information. Well I'll tell ya.

  • Username - Pretty self explanatory
  • Time Zone - Currently the majority of our mods live in Central USA, and thus are online about roughly the same time. This leaves gaps in our ability to mod posts in a timely matter. Having mods in various Time Zones allow us to ensure our community runs efficient. After all, the Internet is Global. Not ever one lives in the USA.
  • CSS/HTML/Coding - This is for the back end when it comes to our tools. Since we will be loosing the Woodworking Bot due to reasons, We will need to focus a lot on making sure Automod can be programmed to handle it. Having background/experience in coding helps. The CSS/HTML is to help give the Subreddit a facelift.
  • Modding Experience - Like any job (and yes, this is very much a "job"), having Experience is always a plus.
  • Why - Well, this helps us understand the reasoning behind why you want to do this. And to ensure that all the hard work we have done over the past few years to clean up this sub isn't in vain. Afterall, according to everyone negative post we have received, Mods are power-hungry toddlers.

These are just a few of the changes that we are starting with. We have a few other ideas we are floating as well. But will start with these first. So with that all said get out there and start making Sawdust!
