Question about learning to beat match by ear
Post Body

Hi,

Bedroom/house party beginner DJ here. I am practicing to get good enough to play the occasional house party and make recorded mixes. Im 47 and can’t imagine ever playing in a club environment or other situation where Im not bringing my own gear.

Based on that, is there really a compelling reason to learn to beat match by ear? I know this is a rite of passage and completely necessary if playing on CDJs but I just don’t think I’ll ever do that.

I don’t mind practicing and working hard to get good at what I want to do, but matching by ear seems to be a fairly significant time and energy issue and I don’t want to do that if the only compelling reason is to transfer the skill to a setting I’ll never be in.

I DO intend on continually upgrading my home studio to that one day I have a super killer set up and if there are controllers out there that have features I’ll want AND you have to beat match by ear that’s a consideration. Otherwise, I just don’t see the point.

Thanks
