Bearded Dragon beginner setup help

I know this probably sounds silly, but is sand a bad choice for my son’s new Bearded Dragon? We got four different opinions at Petsmart. Can someone suggest what works best for them and why? I would really appreciate any feedback from an experience owner. Thank you
