The big man is doing VERY well. He's a happy healthy dragon from what I and several vets can tell. His favorite activities include climbing on everything he possibly can, showing off how big his beard is, flexing on us all, hanging out on his colorful hammock, listening to Disney princess music, and chasing down crickets.
Many of you know that Ody has an issue absorbing potassium. He wasn't born this way, but his condition developed when he was around 5. We will most likely never know what caused this to happen. He will have this issue for the rest of his life as far as we can tell. This is how we are treating him:
• Sprinkling Rental K (Potassium Gluconate) in his food daily
• One syringe of Rental K (Potassium Gluconate) mixed with baby food each day
• Bath every few days. (We've noticed the supplement tends to make him dehydrated and the baths help)
As far as his big buggy eyes go, we still have no idea. I went so far as to consult a reptile specialist at my local zoo and they couldn't figure out what was up either. As far as we can tell, it isn't bothering him or effecting his vision/quality of life.
Basically, Ody's normal is not every other bearded dragon's normal, but he's healthy all the same.
Potassium deficiency is literally unheard of in bearded dragons, but Ody is a special guy! However, if your bearded dragon exhibits the following symptoms, I highly suggest getting blood work done and checking on potassium levels:
• lethargy • muscle spasms • twitching while moving • general decline in health
I hope Ody's journey helps someone! As always, I'll continue to update if something else changes.
