My DIY unistrut hard point install guide, with pictures

Post Body

Hi all, recently installed a unistrut hard point in my basement with some information gleaned here and my local community and wanted to post my setup as I didn't really see any guides with pictures and to welcome critique of my setup.

I say unistrut but ended up going with superstrut from Home Depot as it was readily accessible. I used the 10ft 12ga strut, cut down to about 9 feet to fit my space.

My basement is finished and a 1940s house. I confirmed that the floor joists are 2x6 and spaced 16" apart. To attach the strut to my ceiling, I choose Spax PowerLags as they seemed a better technology than old school lag bolts. No predrilling was required, and according to the datasheet on the size that I got (1/4" by 4"), they have a withdrawal rating of 1500 lbs. I used a 1 1/4" fender washer for mounting to the strut and attached them to 6 floor joists.

Here's the lag screws and fender washers

For mounting to the unistrut itself I did go to a construction store to get eyebolts, Home Depot didn't have these. I got Proto J94024 1/2" steel forged eyebolts, rated to 2400 lbs. I used these 1/2" nylon cone nuts, which were rated for 2000lbs (page 10). And then used a square strut washer, locking washer, and regular nut to tighten it all together.

Here's the full assembly.

And the finished installation. I have three eyebolts, I'll use 2 to hang a bamboo pole, and keep one in the center for a ring.
