Any ideas for how to attach lashes to a vintage handle?

First time making a flogger!
I found an old spindle (something like this) at an antique store and thought it’d make an excellent flogger handle. I’d prefer not to wrap the spindle to preserve the appearance, but rather somehow attach the rope lashes in the hole at the end of the spindle. My thought was to wrap the ends of the lashes tightly and hot glue them into the hole. Any better ideas?
