Yahoo had to sell it for a 99.85% loss to a small group that's trying to get it back to what it was. Currently they're in a battle with the Apple App store about what they're allowed to let people post. The app store wants them to ban everything that's more than PG-13; Tumblr wants to go back to allowing full NC-17 to XXX stuff. They're currently orbiting in the higher end of the R rating in terms of what they'll allow.
Ultimately it's because apple has so much market share in the mobile market, a locked down product that 90% of users won't be able to jailbreak, and the fact that they are a very conservative company that is causing a lot of this. That and payment processors withholding the advertiser payments from sites if they don't ban adult content.
