Visibility and map design, how it impacts gameplay and experience

Post Body

Just as a quick disclaimer, this thread is not about balance or any particular mechanics. It will discuss only visibility of the map/player models and all around design of the maps in general.

Also, almost everything will be compared to battlefield one, as basically everything you could say fairly is just an '''''''''improvement''''''''' of bf1.

So, for starters, lets talk about the visibility.

The lighting and shading of textures in model have WAY too drastic contrast between light and dark. example.

If it's not in the light, its completely blacked out. Theres no in between, no gradual shading, no light reflection, thats not how any of this works. This creates a visual clusterfuck with no reason discerning scenery, just lots of colors next to eachother.

Coupling this with camoflauge, this makes it incredibly difficult to see targets even right in front of you. This is an enemy. Literally invisible.

Camoflauge, while effective not only isn't nearly as effective in real life, is enhanced even more by the terrible shadowing. Camoflauge is meant to guise yourself by people who arent necessarily looking for you. But this is a video game, so for the sake of balance, it needs to be turned down a lot.

Every single map, even with direct overhead sun, casts shadows as if it was sunset. This just doesn't work. I find the night time maps a LOT easier to see people because theres not as much color contrast to hide in.

I often feel like my best weapon is literally just to go prone and nobody will see me. I cannot tell you how many kills ive gotten, how many objectives ive taken, how many squads ive wiped, by just laying down in plain visible sight. It's bad.

Second, the map design. These maps were clearly made to be played on Grand Operations and Breakthrough only, as they are way too damn big to be played on conquest and the other modes unless gimped in size. However, even for those gamemodes, its way too huge.

The maps have nothing in them for the most part, anything that doesn't take place in populated cities or suburbs has huge amounts of open nothingness, with no real cover, Hamada being my culprit of choice

Many many points theres no coordinated way to play. Recon is extremely effective and honestly it just makes me not want to play anything else. No cover, long open stretches, just run in and hope you don't die (to invisible enemies mind you). From spawn to point its over 30 seconds of straight running with little if any cover.

The maps are so spread out that it feels like you're getting shot from fucking everywhere. Bf1 these same styled maps had a very clear front line, if im standing on the point I can feel very confident i need to look in 1, maybe two directions max. Here? All bets are off, they could be coming from behind me, in front, from the cliffs, sniper fire, who knows. I'm getting shot at from EVERYWHERE

Cover. Yeah lets talk about that. It sucks. A lot.

The fortificatons feel utterly useless, having two thick walls of sandbags do not make me feel like im protected. One shitty nade and the entire wall is gone. I frequently find myself having to re-repair the fortifications practically after every kill.

Couple this with a lack of neutral cover, it removes practically any way to bunker down safely. Im a bit biased because my favorite has always been the basket magazine MMG's, but this is ridiculous. It promotes run and gun call of duty style gameplay.

Don't get me wrong, grenades have some kick. But unless you have an RPG, C4, or a tank, no walls or fortifications should be coming down. this is a grenade explosion. Its meant to propel shrapnel. it does not bring down walls or fortifications. And because the grenade damage has been severely nerfed, it feels like thats all they are good for.

Because the cover system is so shit, it makes me feel like im forced to play into the 'invisibility' strategy.

It just feels....incomplete. The game is definitely there, but the maps feel like they need more to it. Fortifications need to mean more and last more. Map sizes and borders need to be smaller.
