Sewn Pockets?

Hi, so I'm working on my first battle jacket, and decided to sew my iron on patches to make sure they don't roll off when the glue gets old. I put my Woodstock Music Festival patch on my breast pocket, and started to sew it, only to realize that it was a nightmare sewing it while also leaving the pocket useable. Are there any other tips or tricks of the battle jacket/vest trade that would be helpful to know?
