Importing From Japan to USA?

Post Body

Howdy everyone! I've been looking around for some vintage Japanese "lawsuit era" basses, and started to look at listings in Japan since I have some family there. I've never dealt with importing anything bigger than a stack of books, so I looked into customs for instruments and got caught in a snag. From what I can understand, as of 2017 any instruments made with mahogany or rosewood require CITES paperwork from the seller? Has anyone ever dealt with this? What was the process like? If you didn't bother with the paperwork, what was your experience? I'd like to hear from anyone who has ever bought instruments from Japan and had them shipped back home here in the States. Horror stories and easy breezes are encouraged to post!
