Do you need a thumb to play bass?

I’m a guitarist but recently I had an accident while trimming brisket. My right thumb tendon was sliced through and it’ll be 2 months before I can hold a pick again. I’m thinking about buying a bass so my left hand doesn’t suffer as well. Do I need my thumb to play?
