In what situations can I use inversions?
Post Body

I'm reading Bass guitar for Dummies and the author says you can use inversions when you want to play a chord on a different chord tone(eg 3rd or fifth) instead of the root. What are some specific situations where this would be useful? Why would I not want to start on the root?
