Post Body

Long post alert: VSG 7/29/2021 Hw 292 lbs Sw 287.5 lbs Cw 170ish lbs Age 32 Height 5’1”

This is all in bullet points so it will hopefully be easier to read/take in.

  • This whole journey started when I needed emergency gallbladder removal surgery (a cholecystectomy) on 10/25/2019.
  • It was laparoscopic and I slowly developed a large hernia under one incision and a small hernia under another incision.
  • Of course in order to fix the hernias with mesh, I needed to be under a certain BMI.
  • I tried losing the weight through diet/exercise and weight-loss medication but ended up going from about 250 lbs to my highest weight of 292.
  • I did the VSG surgery July 2021 and have slowly lost the required weight - and then some - over the last year or so.
  • I also developed a hiatal hernia (type 1, so not super dangerous) a few months post-op and the symptoms have become less and less painful/annoying.
  • I have a significant amount of excess fupa and apron skin and was planning to do a sort of all-over skin removal AFTER getting the hernia fixed because who knows how that would affect things. Plus I have a ton of extra inner-thigh skin, saggy sad boobs, and some upper-arm wing action I’d like to fix.
  • I just went to the surgeon (the one who did my VSG) where he finally approved me for the hernia repair… yay!! (side note: I’d gone in June to see him but he told me he wanted to see if I could lose just a bit more by the end of the summer).
  • However, he said he wanted me to consult a plastic surgeon for skin removal in the fupa/apron area.
  • There is 99% chance would NOT be covered by insurance, but he would go in and fix the incisional hernias and then the other guy would go in and snip the skin… that way I would recover all at once.
  • Sounds good but I also wanted the hiatal hernia fixed.
  • Apparently, I can choose one or the other - hiatal hernia fix OR excess skin removal.
  • I haven’t spoken to the plastic surgeon yet and the hernia repair hasn’t been scheduled… but I’m still unsure of what to do.
  • PLUS, I haven’t had kids yet and it’ll be a few years till my husband and I start trying for one.
  • Is it worth doing plastics in that area now just for the pregnancy to perhaps complicate it later?
