Valverde Assessment - is there hope for Ernie?
Post Body

This post is for people to give their criticisms and compliments in a measured and respectful way. What are EV's strengths and weaknesses as a manager?

I'll start.

Strengths:

Sometimes (like today) makes good substitutions. Players say they like him. He's giving chances to La Masia players and strengthening the academy in general. In certain games (like the first leg of the semi), his game plan was effective.

Weaknesses:

Tactic are ambiguous and inconsistent. Messidependencia. Impassive on the sideline (nice to see him get angry today). Relatively inflexible. Not a very inspiring or effective man-manager. Unwillingness to bench or criticize the "untouchables" group of players. Strongly defensive-minded coach (mid-table mentality that de-emphasizes the attack/goals, but despite that the defense is not very strong). Most of all, seems to learn from his mistakes very slowly.

Overall, in certain ways he seems to be improving. The substitutions today came much earlier than usual, and were absolutely the right ones. That said, why wasn't Arthur on in the first place?

He is getting more vocal during games. But, Barca is still stagnant and inconsistent, without a clear overall strategy.

Here are some articles that give analysis (mostly unfavorable because I couldn't find any analyses on why he's a good coach): one from 2018 that's still relevant. Depressing highlights include Valverde saying he waited until the 80th minute to make subs "because he didn't know how to change the game," as well as this insight full passage:

When they win, it’s mostly due to individual superiority and brilliance, but when they lose it’s clear that they’re lacking guidance off the pitch which is supposed to be given by the coach.

And this article from earlier this year. Worrying note: Ernie apparently still hadn't watched the liverpool game several weeks after the Anfield disaster.
