Can I write off tools as a business expense if I'm an employee?

Post Body

I bought me some new JRL clippers and trimmers for my new job in a hair salon. I'm not an independent contractor (I don't rent a chair, I don't supply my own product, etc etc), I'm employed by the salon hourly commission.

I'd really like to write off my new clippers and trimmers off as a business expense, but I have no clue how to do it or where to start (or if I'm out of luck and it's not even possible as an employee). Can someone point me in the right direction? Does anyone have experience writing tools off as a W-4 employee?

You can - but the amount of additional expenses you'd need to make it worthwhile would make it pointless. You either take the standard deduction - or you itemize - not both. And very few people have enough legitimate write-offs to make it worthwhile to not just take the $14,600 standard deduction for a single person.
