Can't become a mercenary

So I'm trying to become a mercenary then vassle to try get my own land for the main quest it when I'm talking to the lords the option is greyed out saying I need to be clan LV 1 an have 10 relationship (I think) but I'm clan LV 4 and the lord I talked to I have 39 relationship. Is this a bug or is I Mabye base of the king's relationship with me
