Second line siege defense for keep

So I actually haven’t fought a single siege defense in my new 150 hour play though. That being said I now see that castles have a second defensive ring, with a gate, this is before the internal keep battle. Has anyone had any luck with manning this wall (now I think about it, can you even get on the wall?) to mount a second line of defense? I imagine the news spawn locations make this very difficult though.
